Property Description

Fourteen steps lead up to the main entrance gate and an alleyway leads through a luxurious garden among tall pine and cypress trees. From here, twenty-one steps take you up to the main terrace, in front of the villa. Right in front of the house is the Italian-style garden with flower beds planted with white roses and oleander trees. Villa Lennox came into its current owner’s family in the late 19th century and its owners’ elegance and exclusivity make it the most desirably rented property on the island of Capri. It is very large for an island villa. Cool marble and old hand-made tiles on the floors, vaulted ceilings, antique furniture, and private balconies give the interiors of the villa a timeless feel. Externally, the architecture of the villa has clean lines, with the old round-shaped vaults painted white throughout - in a typical Caprese style. Its garden is divided into three levels, the top level, after walking through a small lemon grove, hides its large pool deck. The garden, which spreads all around the house, continues up a hill, covering an area of seven hectares, encompassing the entrance driveway which was formed from an ancient Roman chariot path. The landscape of this magic garden was created in 1894 and is characterized by shady pine trees, roses, grape vines, olive terraces, columns, and even a neo-Greek temple. It’s the largest garden on the Island of Capri and has a spectacularly Italian layout in a Rinascimento style. A true ruin, a Napoleonic fort, is located at the top. A path of approximately 100 steps along a walk leading by a fountain, leads up to the hill of Mount San Michele, to the very top of the mountain, which boasts a 360-degree panorama of the much-varied landscapes of the entire island, offering glorious views towards the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The walk to the top of the mountain slope is constantly full of surprising angles and places. On top of the hill, you will find a florid lemon garden. In the middle of the 18th century, when the villa was owned by an English aristocratic family, a small temple in neoclassical style was built on one of the properties’ most panoramic spots and became a place where its owners would come to drink afternoon tea under the shade of the pine trees. Copies of the bronze statues found in the Ruins of Pompeii mixing with the lush green and grey stone of the mountain and the perfumes of the greenery lie here helping make it a true dreamland. Returning down towards the house you will pass the large deposits with vaulted ceilings, which were built by the Romans. At the time of Emperor Augustus and Tiberius, these deposits were large water cisterns, bringing water to the entire island (including Emperor Augustus’ private luxury residence, called Villa Jovis). They remain as decor and storage rooms, where wine and olive oil are preserved. Twenty-one steps lead from the villa up along the garden to a wonderful florid lemon pergola, lined by white columns. The path takes you to the terrace where a large irregularly shaped pool, is located. The pool is surrounded by palm and pine trees and large potted cactus and is lined by a stone wall covered with violet Bougainvillea. There is an outdoor shower and a small changing room. The terrace is equipped with sun lounge chairs and enjoys views of the hillside of Mount San Michele. A large marble terrace, with steps descending down towards the garden, furnished with a table and chairs for outdoor dining lies in front of the house. The main entrance door leads into the living and dining area, welcomed by two small Roman statues, which is divided into two different rooms by four steps. Both rooms are furnished with pieces of antique wooden furniture and day beds, many of which date back to the eighteenth century. Both enjoy colorful textiles, antique mirrors, prints and painting all standing in contrast with the white-washed walls. The entire floor has spacious rooms with high ceilings. The dining room, furnished with a library, has a large round wooden table, six chairs, and windows giving onto the garden. There is a large living room with a parquet floor and oriental carpets furnished with several different sitting areas, each comforted with sofas and armchairs, large mirrors and paintings hanging on the walls and an antique fireplace. Two French doors lead out onto a terrace. A large, well-equipped kitchen built with white tiles boasts a marble-topped dining table for four, refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, six range stove top, two ovens, two sinks, and a working wood oven. One step down leads into a separate laundry room where a washing machine, sink, and, ironing facilities abound. The kitchen has a window and a door leading out behind of the house. There is also a half bathroom on the ground floor. A marble staircase of twenty steps leads up to the first floor where five spacious bedrooms and four bathrooms are located. The first is a large double bedroom with a double bed and French doors leading out onto the terrace looking out onto the garden. The bedroom is furnished with bedside tables, two lamps, antique wooden furniture, two armchairs, a wooden writing desk with lamp and mirror, and a wooden closet and has en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom enjoys a romantic golden wooden headboard shaped like a sea shell with French doors leading out onto the terrace overlooking the garden. The bedroom is spacious with a glass-topped table, writing desk and chair, armchair, and closet. A bathroom with a bathtub, shower box with glass door, marble-topped desk, and sink is situated nearby. The third bedroom is a beautiful and large master bedroom with a wooden baldachin bed, parquet floors, bedside tables, an antique fireplace, a dresser, chairs, a chaise lounge and a large closet. Two French doors lead out onto a private terrace overlooking the garden. The bedroom enjoys a blue tiled en-suite bathroom with bathtub and shower box and marble sink. The fourth bedroom boasts twin beds and a small closet and the fifth bedroom has a double bed and a small closet. Both bedrooms have French doors leading out onto the terrace overlooking the garden. There is also a fourth, blue-tiled bathroom with bathtub and shower. The villa is reachable by car or a ten-minute walk from the main square of Capri.

Location Information

Villa Lennox is set in a prestigious and central location. This lovely and unique property is located only a 10-minute walk from the Piazzetta (main square) and the centre of Capri. Fantastic, panoramic views over the entire town and the Bay of Marina Piccola can be enjoyed from its gardens. The property boasts water cisterns from the period dating back to Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. The area where the villa is located once gave water to the entire district of the town of Capri. The hillside is full of wells – the antique Roman water courses brought water as far as Villa Jovis, Emperor Tiberius’ marvellous Palace. The villa and its gardens is a true oasis of peace at a very short distance from the glamour and bust of the Piazzetta in Capri.
